Harwinton is a growing suburb with easy access to shopping and cultural centers that manages to avoid the suburb stereotype with an individual rich history.
The village is a classic example of New England charm with a Congregational Church and stone memorial chapel given by Collis P. Huntington, financier of Southern Pacific Railroad Co.
Harwinton is a part of Regional School District 10. Young citizens attend Hawintion Consolidated School, then the regional Har-Bur Middle School and finally Lewis S. Mills High School in nearby Burlington.
The annual Harwinton Fair in October features a wood chopping contest, cattle show, concessions, music and a plethora of food.
Local history is preserved by the Harwinton Historical Society, with displays including a collection of antique farm tools, a restored 1840s schoolhouse and replica 19th century style barn. The society sponsors a classic ice cream social annually the first Sunday of August.
